They left the car at the foot of an impassable road, walked through a covered wooden bridge over what had once been a stream, and followed the same road along the side of a cliff to a grape arbor on what was obviously an abandoned farm.
The arbor was so thickly covered with vines that daylight penetrated only a few feet inside, and the ground was covered with a thick soft layer of fallen leaves.
Just inside the arbor Steve paused, thinking this was the place Nancy had had in mind, but she shook her head, grasped his arm firmly with both hands, and hurried him through the dimness of the arbor toward the patch of sunlight at the other end.
“This used to be my father's place,” she said in her breathless voice. “This is where I grew up, Steve.”
Steve said nothing. After his first instinctive reaction to a woman whose desire he had been able to arouse almost instantly, his own desire had subsided. It had always been that way with him. Whenever a woman had taken over the role he himself had expected to play, his need for her had almost invariably dissipated itself, and there had been times when he had even become completely impotent.
Now, as Nancy hurried him through the grape arbor, he felt the sense of wrongness, of vague apprehensiveness, that he always experienced when control of a situation had been wrested from his hands and there was no apparent way to recapture it.
They came out in a small grassy clearing completely surrounded by trees and very tall bushes. The sun was directly above them now, and the baked grass glowed warmly in its rays.
Nancy stood very close to him, smiling up at him with bright lips that trembled even as she spoke to him. “This is the place, Steve,” she said. “No one can see us here.”
He nodded dumbly, glancing about the clearing, wondering why it was that Nancy had surprised him so profoundly. This was no unique experience, this abrupt hunger. It had happened many times before; only the details had varied. And yet she had surprised him, very nearly stunned him.
“When I was a very young girl,” Nancy said, “I used to come here. This was my very own place, Steve. I'd come here when the sun was bright and take off my clothes and pretend people were hiding in the bushes, watching me. I did it all the time.”
She undressed slowly, her eyes averted, watching his face through her lashes. When she was completely naked except for her pumps, she stood for a long moment, smiling at him; and then she sank down slowly on the grass and lay back and raised her arms to him.
“Hurry, Steve,” she whispered. “Please hurry.”
